Should your pet be on a daily multi-vitamin and mineral supplement?
If common sense prevails, the answer is a resounding YES!
In our modern world we, as humans, know that the nutritional value of all food types has been diminished due to pollution, water quality, over farmed soil and a host of other factors, so we all supplement with various vitamins and minerals of some sort.
Why should it be any different for our animals? Whether you are feeding cubes, meal, cooked or raw diets, it stands to reason that the possibility of all the required vitamins and minerals; in a real, useable amount, are slim at best.
We have listed just a very few vitamins animals require and what function they perform.
- Vitamin A (a fat-soluble Vitamin) are responsible for foetal development, growth, vision, immune and general cell function.
- Vitamin B Group including Thiamine, Riboflavin, Pantothenic & Folic acids play a vital role for the metabolism of Amino Acids, assists energy levels, muscle function & promotes healthy skin & hair.
- Vitamin C is an important antioxidant, scavenges potentially harmful free radicals, reduces inflammation and cognitive ageing.
- Vitamin D (The sunshine Vitamin) allows the animals’ body to balance minerals for healthy bone and muscle growth.
- Vitamin E (a fat-soluble Vitamin) is essential for cell formation and defence against oxidative damage, muscle degeneration and reproductive issues.
Is individual vitamin/mineral supplementing a safe practice?
The answer to that is a resounding NO! Many vitamins and minerals need to be given together, for example;
- too much CALCIUM can cause skeletal problems and needs to bind with ZINC to maintain the growth and structure of bone.
- IRON combines with COPPER to form haemoglobin, the molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen through the body.
Can you OVER SUPPLEMENT your animal?
NO, if you are using a balanced and vet-registered product, quantities of each of the ingredients is strictly regulated, making it safe for daily use.
All studies and papers presented, accepted, and published by the World Health Organisation (gathered by the USA Committee of Nutrient Requirements of Animals), indicate that due to the faster metabolism of animals, their bodies only use what they need on a daily basis with the excess excreted (animals have very limited storage capacity).
