What is efficacy in the world of supplementation?
The general meaning of the word efficacy is “producing the desired effect”, so how does this relate to supplementation, and specifically to your pet’s health?
There is no point in spending a fortune on expensive supplements if they don’t “solve the problem” or have a noticeable effect on your animal – animals can’t always tell you how they feel but their behaviour and demeanour can often speak volumes.
The improvement should be noticeable or the supplement isn’t working.
For me, the yardstick is to see an improved energy, shinier coat and improved immune system. These outcomes need to be clearly visible for me to accept that the supplement is doing its job.
From a scientific perspective, consistent results and bioavailability (how well the body absorbs and is able to use the supplement) are also valuable benchmarks to use.
Animals have a much faster constitution than humans, so any supplementation that is not needed is passed through the body on a daily basis – it is almost impossible to overdose animals on supplements!
